PWA rubrics and anchor papers are essential tools for calibrating and scoring the Process Writing Assessment and fostering common expectations for grade level writing standards throughout the district. The rubrics provide a common tool for talking about student writing, and the anchor papers show concrete examples of what elements of the rubric look like in OUSD students' writing.
We use a four point holistic rubric to score the PWA. When scoring holistically the reader looks at all features of the student work equally; no one feature is more important than the other. Holistic scoring is a useful way to evaluate PWA writing because it is a more authentic "real world" way to read writing and it focuses on what the student does best, and while allowing the reader to evaluate the papers relatively quickly.
